Handcrafted Disciple Making

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.- Matthew 28:19

These are some of Jesus’ final words to his followers before he ascended back to the Father, so we know they are super important! But what is the best way to “make disciples”?

After more than 20 years of church leadership, I am convinced that disciples are hand crafted, not mass produced widgets.

I am grateful for large churches that have a laser-like focus on creating the best possible weekend experience so that as many people as possible can experience amazing worship and relevant teaching. I am grateful for medium sized churches that can offer an abundance of midweek programming for every possible age and demographic. And I think smaller faith communities can be places where disciples can be handcrafted.

I’ve been contemplating this idea that smaller churches are more like “boutique shops”. They are more eclectic and not for everyone. But they can also offer something that the larger big box stores like Target and Walmart can’t offer: a more custom built experience with hands on attention and care.

What do you think? Am I on to something or do you disagree with me? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
