What It Means to Have Influence: A Christian Perspective
Influence is a powerful thing. We see it everywhere: in politics, social media, entertainment, and even within our own families. But as Christians, we’re called to a different kind of influence. It’s not about power or popularity; it’s about reflecting Christ in everything we do.
Influence Starts with Character
True influence isn’t about how many followers you have or how much money you make. It starts with who you are. People are drawn to authenticity, integrity, and kindness. As followers of Christ, we are called to be the “light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). That means that our words, actions, and choices should point others toward God.
Think about the people who have influenced you the most. Chances are, they weren’t necessarily the loudest or the most powerful. Instead, they were the ones who lived their lives in a way that made you want to be better. Their faith wasn’t just something they talked about—it was something they lived out daily.
Influence Through Everyday Actions
Many of us think of influence as something reserved for leaders, pastors, or celebrities. But the truth is, we all have influence, whether we realize it or not. Your kindness to a stranger, the way you treat your coworkers, the patience you show with your children—all of these small, everyday actions add up to something much bigger.
Jesus was the perfect example of influence through everyday actions. He didn’t seek power or fame. Instead, he washed feet, healed the sick, and spent time with the outcasts of society. His influence wasn’t about making a name for Himself; it was about serving others and pointing them to the Father.
Influence Requires Responsibility
With influence comes responsibility. The way we live our lives affects others, whether we intend it to or not. That’s why Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Every decision we make, big or small, should reflect our desire to honor God and lead others toward Him.
This means being intentional about how we speak, how we act, and even how we interact online. Social media, for example, can be a powerful tool for influence. But are we using it to uplift and encourage others, or are we spreading negativity and division? As Christians, we should always strive to use our platforms, no matter how big or small, to spread love, hope, and truth.
Influence That Leaves a Legacy
At the end of the day, the kind of influence that matters most isn’t about worldly success, it’s about leaving a legacy of faith. The most influential people in history weren’t always the richest or the most famous. They were the ones who loved well, served faithfully, and pointed others to Jesus.
So, how are you using your influence? Are you living in a way that draws others closer to God? Whether through your family, your workplace, or your community, remember that you have the power to make an eternal impact.
Influence isn’t about being known; it’s about making Christ known.
