I love putting my son to bed.
Now, one reason I love putting him to bed is because then I get some alone time with my wife! Kids are awesome…but man, its great when bedtime arrives!
But that’s not the reason I love putting my son to bed. I love doing bedtime because its a chance to disciple my 2 1/2 year old son.
Lately, the only stories my son Joshua wants us to read are from his Children’s Bible. I love that. I get to read scripture and talk to him about God’s faithfulness and grace.
I love that Josh’s favorite song, that he asks for EVERY night, is the worship song “Glory to God Forever” by FEE.
As parents, we are responsible for the spiritual development of our kids. Throughout the day, we try to disciple our kids and talk about God. But bedtime is a great opportunity because life slows down and you get the chance to really focus on your kids.
If you are a parent, use the time you have to have intentional conversations with your kids and to help them grow in their understanding of who God is and to help them become more like Jesus. Its never too early (or too late) to start having spiritual conversations with your kids. Don’t leave that responsibility to others- not even to your church! Churches are great but parents have the primary responsibility of shepherding their kid’s hearts. Take that responsibility seriously and use all the time you have… even bedtime. And then enjoy some alone time with your spouse…a couple times a week…but that’s another blog post.
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 19:14
